Manuka Essential Oil – An Australian Tea Tree Alternative

One of the greatest healing gifts from the New Zealand plant world is, without question, the Manuka tree.

Manuka (botanically known as Leptospermum scoparium and sometimes known as ‘New Zealand Tea Tree’) is a highly medicinal plant with healing properties that were originally discovered and harnessed by the country’s indigenous Maori people, and later became of great importance to the country’s early European settlers.

Due to its concentrated potency, Manuka essential oil, which is extracted from Manuka leaves, is a wonderful alternative to the essential oil of Australian Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). Some reports have even suggested that Manuka essential oil is 20 times more powerful than its Australian counterpart.

Whether it is 20 times more powerful or not, Manuka essential oil is wonderful for fungal skin infections (eg. athlete’s foot, ringworm and nail fungus) and has excellent antibacterial properties which make it useful for acne spot treatment or a wonderful natural first aid remedy to cuts and scrapes.

To help treat sinus problems, respiratory illnesses and allergies, the Maori people used to (and intact tribal communities quite possibly still do) boil fresh Manuka leaves in water then inhale the vapors. It was also typically used as a poultice – that is, freshly crushed Manuka leaves were wrapped around wounds or diseased skin to enhance healing and prevent infection. In addition, Manuka shoots were consumed to treat dysentary, and a warm, pain-relieving infusion made from the leaves and bark was massaged into rheumatic joints and aching muscles.

Whether these traditional remedies were highly effective is difficult to confirm, however modern science has positively validated the potent healing properties of Manuka, in particular the constituents of its essential oil.

In fact, scientific analysis of organic (or wild harvested) Manuka essential oil has shown up to 30% concentration of potent anti-microbial constituents, testing active against a broad range of micro-organisms that cause infections of the skin. Manuka essential oil has also tested 15 times stronger than Australian Tea Tree oil against Staphylococcus and Streptococcus bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant strains.

For at home applications, some common uses for Manuka Essential Oil are:

Fungal infections (ringworm, athlete’s foot) - 3-4 drops of undiluted Manuka essential oil to affected area twice daily, using cotton tip. Continue applying 1 week after symptoms clear.

Dandruff/itchy scalp - Mix in 5-8 drops of Manuka essential oil into normal amount of shampoo for 1 application. Apply to scalp and leave on 5 minutes before thoroughly rinsing.

Acne Spot Treatment - 2-3 drops of undiluted Manuka essential oil on a cotton tip. Apply to acne blemish twice daily.

Cuts/Abrasions - 4-5 drops of undiluted Manuka oil to affected area, using cotton tip. Reduces healing time and helps prevent infection.

Insect Bites/Stings - 3-4 drops undiluted Manuka oil on cotton tip. Apply to affected area to relieve itch and help reduce inflammation.

As with all essential oils, there are always some contraindications for Manuka. If in doubt, always consult with a certified aromatherapy professional. Manuka essential oil should be avoided in pregnancy and lacation due to its spasmolytic (muscle-relaxant) activity.

Tea tree oil, which goes by the synonym tea tree essential oil, comes from the plant known by the Latin botanical name of Melaleuca alternifolia. Although the evergreen tree, which can also grow as a tall shrub, is native to sunny and moist parts of Australia and produces leaves from which tea tree essential oil is produced, tea tree essential oil is found in a number of personal care products. These include lotions, shampoos, soaps, antiseptics and deodorants. There are many reasons why tea tree essential oil is a popular additive to these products.

Tea tree essential oil and organic tea tree oil is often found in personal care products because it is a naturally-occurring antiseptic. It may help with insect stings, burns, cuts and infections of the skin. It may be used for getting rid of lice as well as athlete’s foot and warts. It may also help the body fight bacteria, fungi and viruses, and may bring on sweating.

Organic tea tree oil is also popular in aromatherapy, which uses plant essential oils to bolster the body and mind. Tea tree essential oil has been described as having a warm and fresh yet slightly medicinal fragrance. Aromatherapy diffusers allow you to use organic tea tree oil so that its unique scent fills a room. Diffusers come in both large and small sizes, and all require a heat source in order to warm the essential oil to release its fragrance. Small diffusers are available to be worn around the neck, relying on body heat to warm the organic tea tree oil. Automobile diffusers are small enough to hang from the rear-view mirror or plug directly into the vehicle’s cigarette lighter. Candle diffusers use a lit candle under a shallow basin that holds the tea tree essential oil. Electric diffusers with built-in fans are useful for spreading the scent of organic tea tree oil throughout an entire room.

Certain essential oils are also classified organic. This means that the trees have been grown in such a way that they utilized no synthetic chemical fertilizers or pesticides at any point in their growth cycle. It also means that the property on which the plants grew had to be synthetic fertilizer- and pesticide-free for a length of time prior to organic plant growth. Finally, the grower had to keep detailed records about how the plants were grown and be willing to undergo on-site inspections. In the United States, the United States Department of Agriculture and National Organic Program set out the rules for compliance for organic certification; authorized agencies then certify products, including organic tea tree oil, that meet those standards.

Head lice are parasitic wingless insects. They live on people’s heads and feed on their blood. head lice is very common problem. Many people get head lice in the United States each year. The most important step in treating head lice is to treat the person and other family members with medicine to kill the lice. Malathion works as well as other agents used to kill lice. Malathion must be left on for at least eight hours for it to work. Pyrethrin and permethrin are quite safe to humans. Lindane, however, can be toxic.Permethrin may work better than lindane, though most trials were done before permethrin was widely used and resistance to the drug developed. Pyrethrins are used as a 0.33% shampoo or mousse. Never use gasoline or kerosene. These products can be extremely dangerous.

Aromatherapy has been frequently used to treat for lice, but this has not been confirmed as a viable treatment. Herbal treatments ( tea tree oil) are sometimes used to treat head lice. Avoid head-to-head contact common during play at school and at home. Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with an infested person. Do not share clothing, such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, or hair ribbons. Don’t leave the shampoo or rinse in hair longer than directed. Rinse hair well after the treatment. Regular combing of hair using the bug-busting method can help with early detection as well as treatment. If your child has long hair, tie it back as this helps to reduce the likelihood of contact between their hair and that of an infected child.

Head Lice Home Remedies Tips

2. Apply coconut oil to your head after shampoo and condition.

3. Apply a mixture of lemon and butter on your head, wait for 15 seconds and then rinse your head.

5. Add 1 tsp of garlic paste in 1 tsp of limejuice, and to apply it all over the scalp.

6. Take about 8-10 almonds and crush them to form a paste with 2-3 tsp of limejuice. Apply the paste on the scalp.
